Are you Eligible for the NDIS?
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the NDIS, an individual must meet certain criteria. These include:
- Age: The individual must be aged under 65 at the time of application.
- Residency: The individual must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa.
- Disability: The individual must have a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to participate in daily activities or require significant support to do so. The disability must be likely to be permanent and require lifelong support.
- Functional impairment: The individual must have a functional impairment that impacts their ability to undertake activities of daily living or participate in the community.
- Early intervention: If the individual is a child aged 0-6 years, they may be eligible for early intervention support if they have a developmental delay or disability.
It’s important to note that meeting the eligibility criteria does not guarantee access to the NDIS. The individual’s level of support needs and goals will also be assessed to determine the appropriate level of funding and supports.
To determine eligibility for the NDIS, an assessment is conducted to evaluate the person’s level of impairment and their functional capacity.
This assessment is conducted by a planner from the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) who will also work with the individual to develop a personalised plan of support services and funding.
If an individual is found eligible, they will work with their NDIS planner to develop a plan that outlines their support needs and goals, and the funding they will receive to meet them.
The NDIA website has comprehensive information on applying for the NDIS.
